Monica McDermott is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Arizona State University. Her research focuses on race, class and identity in the United States.  Her book Whiteness in America, is an assessment of what it means to be white in the US., and her current research includes studies of class identity and racial attitudes among the white working class.
